Paleoecology of the Akkașdağı hipparions (Mammalia, Equidae), late Miocene of Turkey

چکیده
Akkașdağı is an abundant and diverse Turolian mammalian locality from Central Anatolia. Our paper reports the findings of our investigation of the paleoenvironment using an ecomorphological approach on the metapodials of hipparionine horses from Akkașdağı. First, a detailed description of the underlying theoretical model is given, and a habitat score is described. Then the model developed here and initially applied to the Bovidae is applied to Akkașdağı and other hipparion localities of Turolian and Vallesian age. Our results confirm the presence of four species of hipparionines in Akkașdağı. The morphology of the metapodials suggests habitat diversity towards the open end of the spectrum. Forested conditions are ruled out.

A new species of Criotherium (Bovidae, Mammalia) from the late Miocene of Bulgaria
We describe here a new species of the bovid Criotherium, from the late Miocene of Bulgaria. The genus was previously known to definitely occur only in Samos (Greece) and Kemiklitepe (Western Turkey), with the single species C. argalioides. The new species, C. nikolovi, is more primitive than the latter, although both are probably contemporaneous, suggesting the occurrence of two lineages in the...

In this study we present the first description of a mysticete skeleton from the late Tortonian to Messinian greyish-green marl of the Coastal Makran, south of Negour in Chahbahar County, Sistan and Baluchestan Province. This specimen is neither completely excavated, nor completely prepared, and therefore all our findings are preliminary. The identifiable components of this fossil thus far consi...
متن کاملEarly-Miocene Gastropods from Khavich Area, South of Sirjan, (Kerman, Iran): Biostratigraphy, Paleogeography and Paleoecology
A total of 12 species of marine gastropods, among which two taxa are new, is reported for the first time from the Miocene deposits of Khavich section, south of Sirjan, Kerman. Gastropods assemblage in Khavich area indicates deposition in shallow, warm ramp-type carbonate platform. The Miocene and even Oligocene gastropod assemblages, relatively similar to Khavich section, reported from the othe...
متن کاملPaleoecology of Early to Middle Miocene Deposits (Guri Member) and Sedimentary Environment, SE Zagros Zone, Roydar, Iran
This research focusses on the facies distribution, paleoenvironment and paleoecology of the foraminifera of the Guri Member in the northern Bandar Abbas Hinterland located in the Roydar area of southern Iran. The Guri Member is 570 meters thick and composed of limestone, argillaceous limestone and marl. The distribution of the foraminifera in the study area indicates the existence of three bioz...
متن کاملQuantitative analysis, basin evolution and paleoecology of Early Miocene ostracods in the southwest of Kerman, Iran
This paper focuses on the quantitative analyses of Early Miocene ostracods in south and north of the Sirjan area, southwest of Kerman. Detailed studies resulted in identification of 23 species of ostracoda. The coexisting benthic foraminifera and comparing the identified microfauna assemblages with previous studies confirms the Early Miocene age for the strata. The quantitative analysis show a ...
